How to Increase RAM Speed? Best Guide 2023

Many people were asking about How to Increase RAM Speed which is why I have come up with this article so that you can get the core knowledge.

Increasing the speed of the system RAM is a good and free way to get the most out of your PC and improve the way it works overall.

But what is the easiest and safest way to change or increase the RAM frequency? This is where my years of experience with computers come in. Read on to find out what I think is the easiest way to optimise and speed up the system memory without putting any hardware at risk. So let’s get started.

How to Increase RAM Speed on Your PC

To change or speed up the RAM on your Windows PC, go into the BIOS and turn on XMP profiles. If that wasn’t the case, RAM modules would always run at the stock frequency. You can also try to speed up the memory by changing the operating voltage and CAS latency by hand.

You can also get the most out of your RAM by closing any background apps or services you don’t need and turning off any anti-virus software you have on your PC. It will make your device’s memory work better overall.

I will quickly talk about the 5 most accurate and tried-and-true ways to optimise and speed up the system RAM in Windows computers.

Here are some ways to speed up the RAM in your computer:

1. Enable XMP

Enabling XMP (extreme memory profile) from the BIOS menu is the most certain way to speed up DRAM.

Most of the time, a high-performance RAM module runs at the stock frequency. To get the most out of your memory, you need to change the speed of the RAM through the BIOS memory profiles.

Also, check out our separate post on Does Ram Brand Matter

Depending on the type of motherboard, the names of the options in BIOS can be different. So it’s hard to say exactly what the path is for XMP settings. But after going through the steps below, you should have a good idea of where this option is.

How to turn on XMP profiles in BIOS:

  • Turn off your computer all the way.
  • Press the button to turn it on. After the splash screen comes up, press and hold the BIOS key (depending on your motherboard model, it’s usually a function key, Esc, or Delete) to get into the BIOS menu.

Note: The instructions and BIOS key will be shown on the first splash screen when the computer starts up. To do this, press the BIOS key. If Windows starts up, it means you didn’t hit the right key quickly enough. Turn on the device and start pressing the BIOS key right away until you get to the BIOS menu.

  • Go to X.M.P profiles or DIMM profiles. If you don’t see an option like this, go to OC > DRAM Settings or a setting with a similar name. Here are some examples:
xmp asus
xmp msi
  • Click the drop-down menu next to X.M.P, which stands for Extreme Memory Profile, and choose Enable.
  • To leave the BIOS menu, click Save & Exit or press F10.

Your computer will now restart. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc and go to the Performance tab. After that, click Memory. In the Speed section, you can see how fast your RAM is right now. If the entry hasn’t changed, you might have left the BIOS without saving the changes.

Go through our epic guide on DRAM Frequency

If the entry has changed, try running some tasks or programmes that use a lot of memory and look for any stability problems. Follow the same steps to turn off the XMP option in the BIOS if you get a BSoD (blue screen of death) or your computer restarts or shuts down on its own.

Also, if you see more than one XMP profile in the BIOS settings, choose the fastest one and check to see if your PC works well. Step down to the slower one and try again if you get a BSoD or any other problem.

2. Check RAM Usage

Keeping an eye on how much memory the system is using is often a good idea, since some third-party apps or services can use up a lot of memory and slow down the system as a whole.

How to check how much RAM is being used in Windows:

  • Select Task Manager by right-clicking on the taskbar.
windows task manager
  • Click on “More details” to see the whole picture. If you’re already in full-screen mode, you can skip this step.
task manager more details
  • Click on the title “Memory.” All processes will be put in order by how much memory they use.

You can now see which apps or services use the most RAM. Keep in mind that apps that use a lot of resources often need more RAM. So it’s not a problem when you run a programme that uses a lot of resources and notice that it uses a lot of system memory.

Follow our guide to CPU Usage

If you aren’t running any memory-intensive apps but still have a lot of RAM used, there’s something wrong. Go to the next method to find out what to do in this situation.

3. Close Unnecessary Background Processes

As I’ve already said, some apps or services can run in the background and use up a lot of system RAM.

This can slow down your computer when you try to play heavy games or do resource-intensive tasks like editing videos, which need a lot of free system memory.

Close any programmes or services that you don’t need to free up memory and improve your PC’s performance when it comes to memory.

Just open the Task Manager and choose the apps or services that are running in the background. Now, click Enter. Keep in mind that some apps and services that are part of the system need to run in the background for them to work properly. So be careful about which service or programme you choose to end.

4. Scan for Malware

If malware gets on your device, you may notice that it uses a lot of memory even when it’s not doing anything. This can make your computer run much slower and cause more memory to be lost.

Windows now has a malware scanner built in that can check your computer for viruses, spyware, and other bad software. It will also do what needs to be done to get rid of any malware on your device.

Check out our expert-recommended How to Choose the Right RAM for Your PC

The steps to scan your computer for malicious software are as follows:

  • Press the Windows Key + S and type “windows defender security center point.”
windows defender security center
  • Press the Enter key.
  • Click Virus and threat protection, then click on Advanced scan.

  • Select “Full scan” and click “Scan now.”

Depending on which version of Windows you have on your PC, these paths may be different. But this guide should give you a general idea of how to scan for malware.

You can also use a third-party anti-virus programs, but these often start using up all of the available system memory. This leads us to our next and last topic, which is…

5. Disable Anti-Virus

Anti-virus programs can help protect your computer from spyware and other harmful software. When these programs are running in the background, they often use a lot of RAM.

This can reduce the amount of system memory available for other apps and slow down resource-intensive tasks like gaming or editing photos and videos.

Do check our latest post on the Will Any DDR3 Ram Work on PC

If you’re having these kinds of problems, try turning off or removing any anti-virus software from your computer.

Last but not least, think about getting more RAM or a faster memory kit. Even though this will cost you money, adding more or faster RAM will make your computer run much faster and let you use more apps at once. You can’t get around it.

Conclusion:

For someone who doesn’t know much about PC hardware, changing the DRAM frequency in the BIOS might seem a little risky. But don’t worry; if you follow this guide, you’ll be able to use your RAM to its fullest without any problems.

FAQs for How to Increase RAM Speed

Can I increase RAM MHz?

Yes. By overclocking from the BIOS and using XMP profiles, you can speed up your computer’s RAM.

Why is my RAM not running at full speed?

If the CPU doesn’t support the frequencies of the XMP profiles, the RAM won’t run at full speed. Motherboards are the same way. Also, you need to turn on XMP from the BIOS. If you don’t do this, the RAM modules will only run at the speed they were made for.

How do I fix low RAM speed?

By turning on XMP in your computer’s BIOS, you can fix slow RAM. You can also change the latency timer to make it work better and get a much faster speed than with the default settings.

Is there a way to increase RAM speed?

Most people think of overclocking in terms of the CPU or GPU, but you can also speed up RAM (random access memory) by overclocking it. The speed of RAM, which is measured in MHz, is how fast it can move data. The RAM works better the faster it can send and receive data.

What speed RAM for gaming?

How fast should a game PC’s RAM be? For a dual-channel build, we recommend that you stick with two DDR4 modules, each with a clock speed of at least 3,000MHz. That should make sure you get the most out of the best CPUs for gaming.
